According to statistics, there are roughly 4.4 million women worldwide who run a mom blog. This trend has been around for nearly a decade, really getting going in around 2013-14, and it is going strong until this day.
Mom blogs are super popular amongst other moms, expectant moms, and other people who simply have an interest in what specific women have to say and share about their experiences and lives as mothers.
The mom blog industry is a big one and a successful one at that. It’s estimated that 55% of moms who use social media have bought a product based on a mommy blogger’s recommendation in the last year.
Mom blogs have engagement, power, and huge followings.
So why wouldn’t you want to start one of your very own as a mom with some spare time and some writing skills?
You do already, I imagine, or you wouldn’t be here reading this blog right now.
If you do want to start a mom blog of your own, you have come to the right place. In this blog, I am going to share a super simple beginner’s guide with you so that you can get started on your very own blogging journey. We’ll keep things easy and assume that you have no prior knowledge, this way the guide can be accessible to as many people as possible.
Let’s get into it!
1. Pick a platform
Blogs can exist on all sorts of platforms but there are some main players out there who you will always want to use to host your own mom blog. Picking a platform that is already popular and already has all the tools and functions you need is the easiest and best way forward.
Your main options will be WordPress, Squarespace, and Wix.
These platforms make it very easy to set up your own blog and/or website and they are all very user-friendly. You won’t need any coding skills to get set up and there are lots of great (free) plugins that you can use to really scale your platform, on WordPress particularly.
Pick one first, get your domain sorted out, and then move on to the next steps.
2. Pick a niche
This might be something you do in conjunction with step 1 as it might influence what you decide to name your site or blog.
As mom blogs are so popular and effective, it means there are lots of pre-existing ones out there already. In order to stand out, get traffic, and meet the goals that you want to meet, you will need to pick a unique niche for your blog.
Fitting into a certain category narrows your audience, but not in a bad way. It means that certain readers will be specifically attracted to your blog for certain reasons, and it is easier to gain a fan base or following.
Some niches you could consider would be:
- Eco-friendly motherhood
- Sporty moms
- Working moms and side hustles
- Gentle parenting
- Single motherhood
- Cultural motherhood issues, BME community for example
- LGBTQ motherhood
- Adoptive motherhood
- Being a mom in a certain country
And so on.
There are lots of ways for you to have a specific angle with your blog writing and lots of ways that you can be you on the market.
3. Do some research and reading
I always say that if you want to be good at something, you need to be a fan of that same thing.
If you want to write a successful blog, one of the best things you can do for yourself is to do some solid reading and research into the pre-existing mom blog market.
Take a look at what is already out there, see what is working and what isn’t working and use that to your benefit. It’s always good to have a realistic view of the industry as a whole before you dive in.
4. Set up a little brand packet of visuals
Your written content will be the most important part of your blog, but something that is also very important is how your blog looks.
Social media and digital content rely a lot on their looks and aesthetics. It is very often this side of things that encourages people to click on certain blogs or not.
But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a talented graphic designer with a big budget to achieve a good look.
All you have to do is head over to Canva and make a brand packet of visuals that you can use on your blog and on your social media accounts too. This keeps things on your mom blog looking good and looking consistent too, which is very important.
5. Link to a social media account
While we are talking about social media, it is important that you link your new blog to a social media account or two too. This will help you spread the word about your blog and increase your traffic in an organic way.
Never underestimate word of mouth when it comes to the success of projects.
Get posting and remember to use those lovely brand visuals you created.
6. Begin writing
The only thing left to do is to get writing!
The most successful content is the content that is authentic and genuine. Try and fill your mom blog with stories, advice, how-tos, guides, inspiration, and everything that comes from your own experience and feelings.
People are pretty quick at spotting filler content, make sure you stand out as something real.
This is the step in which we can’t give you too much more information or guidance… It will be up to you what you write and how you write. Just write it, and keep doing it.
7. Start a posting schedule
On that note, one of the best things you can do for your mom blog to keep your audience engaged and your interaction high is to start a posting schedule for yourself.
You need to post content consistently and regularly on your blog and creating a schedule is an easier way to do that.
8. Keep it up
So, last and not least… Keep up the good work!
Having a successful blog requires long-term effort and determination, you can’t give up in the first month or two.
Keep going, don’t give up and you will quickly see just how successful a mom blog can be.
Good luck!
