Parents, Sarah (28) and Rob (30), got to know each other during their college days. Although they were majoring in different subjects, they had friends in common, so they saw each other regularly at parties and other gatherings. Sirens blaring, the ambulance rushed Sarah to hospital. Sarah, who by this point was no longer conscious, was rushed inside on a stretcher. She was taken directly into the operating room, where she underwent emergency treatment. After the surgery, Rob sat next to her bed, holding her hand, whilst Sarah regained consciousness. The man looked at her intensely and had tears in his eyes.
When he noticed that Sarah was starting to regain consciousness, his heart skipped a beat. He jumped up in relief and kissed her all over her face. Relieved, the couple laughed the tension away. But their joy was short-lived. Because when the doctor walked into her room, Sarah knew right away that something was wrong. “He just had this look in his face,” the young woman said.
Sarah had had a severe heart attack. The doctors treated her as fast as they could, but it was already too late: part of her heart had died off. The couple turned white as a sheet, while the doctor talked to them about what had happened. “You probably have an inherited disorder that caused you to have such a severe heart attack at a very young age.”
“Because part of your heart has died, you’ll tire a lot faster. Heavy physical labor is therefore strongly discouraged,” the doctor told her sternly. “Otherwise your heart might die off completely.” This doctor’s advice arrived like a sledgehammer blow for the young couple. But despite this setback, Sarah was determined to make something of her life. Unfortunately, life had other plans for her…
Once at home, it was difficult for Sarah to do the simplest of household chores. She needed Rob’s help with almost everything. Rob needed to cook, clean and do groceries every day. It was just too much for Sarah. But as time passed, this seemed to change somewhat: Sarah’s heart slowly got used to heavier work and she could do more and more.
Of course, she had to be careful. Because a setback could happen at any moment if she didn’t monitor her health. But things were looking up! Step by step, Sarah picked her normal life back up. She did household chores, went to stores alone and even got enough confidence to start driving a car by herself again. And then came the incredible news!
Sarah had been feeling nauseous for a couple of weeks and decided to go to the doctor, just to be sure. The things she was feeling weren’t symptoms of her condition, but you can never be too sure! They drove over to the hospital and where Sarah and Rob started the drive with casual conversation they finished in absolute silence.
Nerves started to kick in and that was a logical reaction. The last time they visited the hospital they also didn’t get the greatest news. So with that bad track record in the back on their minds thoughts started racing. What could this be? What was the doctor going to say to them? By the time they reached the entrance of the hospital Sarah’s body was trembling…
It wasn’t crowded in the hospital but still it felt like they had to wait for ages before a doctor greeted them. Millions of thoughts raced trough the mind of the young woman. “I am too young to go from hospital visit to hospital visit. This is not the life I want for myself”, she whispered to herself whilst already crying a little bit.
When a doctor finely approached the young woman she was hunched over and was crying intensely. “What is wrong with me doctor? I did everything you people asked me to. I took it slow and build up my strength very carefully. So why am I feeling like this?”, she almost screamed. “Calm down Sarah”, the doctor said. “Let us just take a look at you”
They ran a bunch of tests on her. The first ones were al related to her heart where devices monitored every fluctuation in het body, but the doctor couldn’t find anything wrong with it. They even said that she was recovering a lot quicker than originally was expected. So it was not her heart and other test results also started to come back negative.
“I would like to try one more thing before we wrap this up”, the doctor said. The doctor carefully smiled as he said this. He put some jelly on Sarah’s belly and rolled a tiny machine over the surface of her abdomen. And that gave them an immediate answer. The doctor pointed to the screen and started talking: “Ah that’s what I thought, a baby”
When the doctor told Sarah and Rob the happy news that Sarah was pregnant, the couple couldn’t believe their luck. “A baby! We hadn’t planned it, but we were so happy!” Both parents to be stared at the screen in amazement. “Are you 100% sure?” Both Sarah and Rob asked the doctor one last time. But there was no denying what they saw.
You could clearly see the little one curled up in her belly. Even a thumping heart was visible when the doctor pointed it out. For a moment, they were overjoyed. She shouted trough the house for Rob’s assistance. When Rob saw Sarah’s wet pants and the puddle on the floor beneath her, he knew what needed to be done. While Sarah was carrying the load of their child, he had been preparing 9 months for this moment. A baby seat, wipes, towels and extra water were thrown in the back seats.
And a screaming Sarah took place in the front of the car. “This baby really wants to come out”, she yelled at Rob as he frantically started the car. When they finally arrived at the hospital the young couple knew it was now or never. Would Sarah’s heart be able to handle the birth? At first, everything seemed to be going well.
Sarah was laying down on the hospital bed and sometimes even made jokes. She laughed away the pain from the contractions as if it didn’t hurt her at all. She was so happy that she was finally going to meet her special baby. But once the delivery started and Sarah had to give it her all, things started going awry really fast…
The birthing process was too much for Sarah’s heart to handle. All the machines she was attached went haywire and there was a chaos of doctors and nurses in the room, who did everything they could to save her life. When the cardiac massage started to work and Sarah’s heart slowly started beating again a sigh of relieve filled the room.
Sarah was out of the woods. But time was running out for her unborn child. It was time to shift the focus and make sure that this child was brought into this world fast and healthy. The mother-to-be was rushed to the operating room. The doctors performed an emergency c-section. But when Emilia’s little head came out, it remained dead silent.
Fortunately, the doctor managed to get the little girl breathing fast enough. She was immediately examined thoroughly, including her heart. Fortunately, her mother had not passed on her heart defect to her newborn daughter. Emilia was in perfect health! Relieved, the nurse laid her on her mother’s chest. Sarah had regained consciousness, but was speechless; she was so full of love!
She could finally hold her little baby for the first time. A moment she never would have imagined after hearing her first heart diagnoses.
