Want to be a work from home mom? We can absolutely understand why.
Being a mom involves juggling a lot of responsibilities at all times, including work. Sometimes all you want as a mom is an extra 3-4 hours a day to try and get everything done that you need to get done. Sometimes you might dream of a bigger budget too so that you can afford the often ridiculously high prices of childcare.
So being a work from home mom? Getting to stay at home with your children while making money for the household and avoiding forking out all your hard-earned money for childcare? Yeah… We can see why that would be attractive.
Working from home has so much to offer women all across the world. So, why don’t more of us do it?
Perhaps because we simply don’t know where to start.
And that is where this blog comes in.
We are going to tell you how you can start your new life as a work from home mom, in easy and achievable steps. We think everyone deserves the chance to work while looking after their children, so avoiding all the tough decisions and sacrifices that come with any alternative options.
That is why we want to help you out with this.
Let’s get started.
1. Focus Your Skills and Find A Profitable Niche
Before you get started as a work from home mom, you need to figure out what kind of work you are actually going to do.
Thankfully, there are more jobs than ever that can be done from home. These can take the form of salaried jobs offered by companies or freelance jobs. Freelance jobs can be some of the very best options for moms because they allow high levels of flexibility and change, something that really helps when it comes to juggling a mom’s lifestyle.
Lots of people don’t realise it but basically, everyone has transferable skills to make a profitable career as a freelancer.
If you look on freelance sites like Upwork or Fiverr, you can see what kind of things people are doing as freelance workers and you can see what kind of skills people are looking for when they are posting job adverts. From there, you can fine-hone your skills and experience to create a freelancer profile that will easily make money. Being a work from home mom can look many different ways, it is up to you what path you will choose.
2. Work on Establishing A Digital Presence and Start A Marketing Strategy
If you are starting a career as a remote worker and a work from home mom, you will need to keep up with the times and establish a solid digital presence. You will also need to market yourself, and this will depend on what kind of work you are doing. Some people might just need a good LinkedIn page and maybe a WordPress, some people will need these things plus social media presence and so on, especially to sell products.
The good thing is that you don’t have to be a tech wizard or a graphic designer to make yourself look good online. Free tools like Canva can help you develop a professional-looking website, LinkedIn banner, cover page, social media feed, and so on.
These things might not seem too important at the start of your career as a work from home mom, but they really are. They help show the world who you are, what you do, and why they should hire you. It is important that all of that looks good.
3. Network, Network, Network
On a similar note from our previous point, working from home (especially if you are going to go freelance) requires a level of networking. But don’t worry about this, don’t get stressed that it is going to include a lot of fancy conferences and long Zoom talks.
Networking can simply be having a good LinkedIn presence and connecting with other people online who do the same thing you do.
It is a great way to learn and a great way to find new opportunities.
Being a work from home mom can be lonely at times, even if we don’t want to admit it, so having other adults we can at least shoot a message to about how things are going is always a good thing.
4. Keep a Really Good Track of Your Finances
A big mistake you can make as a work from home mom is not keeping a good enough track of your finances and income, again, especially if you are going to work freelance.
There are lots of finance apps for freelancers that can help you out, but if you want something more simple, the main thing you need is a big spreadsheet of what comes in and what goes out.
Much better to keep a track of it now rather than panic about how things are going to work when it comes around to tax assessment day.
5. Keep a Solid Work-Life Balance
Being a work from home mom can really help you develop a healthy, happy work-life balance, especially in comparison to other “normal” jobs.
However, you need to actively choose this.
People forget sometimes that working from home can push you to work more, rather than less. It can be too easy to simply do a little more in the evenings, on the weekends, and so on. It is easy for work to bleed into your home life too much and you can end up spending less time with your children than you did before you left the office.
Make sure you stick to your boundaries and always remember what is really important.
6. Keep Up The Good Work
Last but not least, being successful as a work from home mom requires consistency and dedication.
It won’t be easy overnight and it is a transition that comes with difficulties.
But once you get things smoothed out, it can be a fantastic way to live and work with juggling everything you need to juggle.
It can truly be a new life.
